There are a number of cheap hotels in Melbourne towards the east. There is the inner-city classy East Melbourne, the Richmond shoppers’ paradise and some cheap accommodation further out into the east of Melbourne.

The inner eastern areas are well connected to the Melbourne CBD. Each has its own charm and distinct style.

The eastern suburbs are not traditionally cheap – but pleasant for a stay.

Nevertheless, you can get some great cheap accommodation there, even directly in East Melbourne.

Cheap Hotels in East Melbourne

East Melbourne is a classy suburb with grandiose villas and wide streets, telling stories of wealthy times. It is walking distance to the Paris end of the CBD, the Yarra and Melbourne sports venues.

If you are after one of the cheap hotels in Melbourne, there are a few very attractive options (this is where I would be staying). It is a great way of being close to, but not right in the city. It is leafy and quiet in comparison.

The Birches Serviced Apartments in East Melbourne are stunning, clean, spacious and friendly. They get great reviews, are affordable and close to the city, the Yarra and the MCG. Good kitchen – pretty good home away from home.

Cheap Hotels in Melbourne - Richmond and Abbotsford

Richmond and Abbotsford are both only about a 10 minute tram ride from the city. Richmond is famous for its great live music venues and its bargain shopping street Bridge Road. It is also a place for trendy restaurants and cafes.

Victoria Street, Abbotsford is a little Vietnam, with numerous authentic Vietnamese eateries and restaurants. Both Richmond and Abbotsford are flanked by the meandering Yarra – great place for a stroll - where you won’t feel like you are in the city at all.


Richmond Hill Boutique Hotel Melbourne

The Richmond Hill Hotel is a charming guest house/ boutique hotel, spacious and comfortably furnished, with attention to detail. Rooms include breakfast, which make it a very well priced stay. Close to Bridge Road, the MCG – highly recommended.


City East Motel Melbourne

The City East Motel in Abbotsford has a 3.5 star rating and offers exceptionally good rates. It is quiet, basic and peaceful with good access to public transport, only 10 minutes from the city.



Cheap Accommodation Melbourne -
in the Outer Eastern Suburbs

Unless your business takes you to the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, you would generally need a car of you are planning to stay further towards the east.

However, the largest shopping centre in the southern hemisphere, the Chadstone Shopping Centre, is also in the southeast and worth a visit if you love to shop.

Melbourne is screwed and expands towards the east and southeast, as traditionally these have been the attractive Melbourne areas. There are a few cheap hotels in Melbourne in some outer eastern suburbs.
