What's on in Melbourne Arts – Music and Festivals
It is hard to give justice to what's on in Melbourne arts, as it is too much to list here. A lot of it isn’t mainstream, but takes place in small performance venues. I have listed major art events below, but also look for the numerable smaller events around town which give Melbourne its special flavour. To find out what’s on in Melbourne arts from day to day, please check the newspapers.
The
Melbourne Arts Centre
has a full program of theatre, music performances and ballet worth checking out.
The National Gallery of Victoria
has an Australian section in the Federation Square complex with a great section, among others, on Australian Impressionism. Its International gallery is located just down from the Arts Centre. Both are hosting various temporary and permanent exhibitions.
What's on in Melbourne arts in Summer:
January - February: Herring Island Summer Arts Festival , on weekends and public holidays at Herring Island Environmental Sculpture Park. A great setting for paintings, sculpture, ceramics, print making, drawing - and an opportunity to see the artist at work:

February, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra free concerts – at Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Not to be missed!

February, St Kilda Festival – one of Melbourne's best known street festivals with an indigenous day and many talentd Australian musicians.

February - March, Brunswick Music Festival – one of Victoria’s premier music festivals and a major cultural event for Australia. It showcases ethnic, indigenous, acoustic and traditional music, featuring local musicians alongside interstate and international guests:

What's on in Melbourne arts in autumn:
March, Contempora Sculpture Award – a major annual arts initiative at the Docklands presenting large and small contemporary outdoor sculpture and installations by recognised Australian and International artists.
April, Melbourne International Comedy Festival - one of the three largest comedy festivals in the world (alongside similar events in Edinburgh and Montreal). There will hundreds of shows in various venues over the three weeks.

April, Apollo Bay Music Festival - a celebration of community and love of music in Apollo Bay. It features outstanding musicians, like the Black Sorrows and the Whitlams, from World Music, to Rock, to Folk to Blues - all in the beautiful setting along the Great Ocean Road:

May, Melbourne Jazz Festival - a popular six day music festival with the best international and Australian jazz - some free events, concerts, workshops and a celebration of music around the city:

What's on in Melbourne in winter:
Melbourne International Film Festival - the most significant film event in Australia. Documentaries, experimental films, and forums with local and international film makers:

What's on in Melbourne in spring:
September, Darebin Music Festival – a community festival that encourages local and community artists to participate. A great place to soak up the Melbourne community spirit, to connect with others and enjoy great music.
October, Melbourne Fringe Festival - The Melbourne Fringe Festival is an annual, open access, multi arts festival. Melbourne has a strong independent arts scene, which comes to light at this festival. Around 90% of the work presented is from Melbourne, which makes the Melbourne Fringe Festival one of a kind.

October, Melbourne International Arts Festival - one of Australia's leading international arts festivals with an outstanding reputation for presenting unique international and Australian events in the fields of dance, theatre, music, visual arts, multimedia. There will also be free outdoor events all around the city.

November, Queenscliffe Music Festival - a fun adult event that has a safe, relaxed festive atmosphere for the whole family:

This is a list of what's on in Melbourne arts. However, this is by far not all. The spirit of Melbourne comes to live in its many community events, bars and live performances, which are too numerous to be listed here.
