Cheap Melbourne Hotels - south & southeast

Many of the cheap Melbourne hotels are not in the CBD but towards the south and southeast of the city.

There is the charming South Melbourne, the trendy South Yarra and one of the favourites, St Kilda by the beach.

These areas are well connected to the city by a 15-25 minute tram ride, which makes it a feasible option for your stay in Melbourne.

The biggest advantage is that you will get a greater sense of Melbourne. Depending where you stay, you will experience Port Phillip Bay, the Botanic Gardens - in short, you will get a bit more nature and a bit more space.

Cheap Hotels in South Melbourne

South Melbourne is spacious and grandiose. It is just across the Yarra from Spencer Street, but you immediately enter another much more quaint and friendly world - away from the business of the CBD.

It is also just next to Port Melbourne with the Bay and Station Pier, Albert Park or the Botanic Gardens. There are pubs, coffee shops, restaurants and boutiques, as well as the popular South Melbourne Market.

South Melbourne is trendy. However, there are nevertheless a few cheap Melbourne hotels:


Albany – Cheap South Melbourne Hotel

The Albany in South Melbourne is charming, eclectic and affordable small hotel – fitted out in retro style. It is close to the Botanic Gardens and Albert Park Lake and not far to South Yarra or the city.


Biz Motel South Melbourne

The Biz Motel in South Melbourne is also close to the Botanic Gardens. It is 3.5 star with clean basic friendly rooms.


Cheap Hotels South Yarra & Prahran

South Yarra and Prahran are on the other side - also walking distance - from the Botanic Gardens.

South Yarra, is the place to be seen. It is great for shopping and eating out in style, with many boutiques, restaurants, fashion labels and stylish cafes.

It is great for a stay in style, away from the city. However, it is generally not cheap. There are only a few cheap Melbourne hotels there.


Quest Windsor Cheap Hotel Melbourne

The Quest Windsor - while located on busy Punt Road - yet offers quiet, clean, modern and spacious 1 & 2 bedroom apartments in Prahran. It gets great reviews and is not far from the city or South Yarra.


Punthill South Yarra Hotel Melbourne

The Punthill South Yarra in South Yarra is 3.5 star and offers great studios and 1 Bedroom apartments. It is located in a tree lined street, giving you the opportunity to get away from the hustle of city life.


St Arnaud, a home away from home in a large historic mansion built in the late 1800's, right next to the Royal Botanical Gardens. It has large living areas and farmhouse style kitchen, where you can make yourself at home, or you can chill out in the garden, and still be only walking distance to the Yarra and the Melbourne CBD.


The Hotel Claremont is also in an 1886 built Victorian guesthouse, and also in trendy South Yarra. It is a 3 Star multiple winner of 'Best Hostel in Australia' award as voted by backpackers.

Budget Hotels in St Kilda and the Bay

St Kilda is hip, cool, a tourist destination and on the beach. This is where you are likely to hear people partying if you are staying on the main road. There are bars, pubs and live music venues - always something happening.

It is also a great shopping area, with independent boutiques and shops and often discounted prices. The Palais Theatre and Luna Park are also in St Kilda as well as a number of cheap Melbourne hotels.

in the same location, will give you self-contained apartments with somewhat better value for money, especially for a family - making it easy to save your dollars arranging your own food.

in St Kilda basic, cheap, OK, and will give you the possibility to cater yourself. It is about 15 minutes walk to the beach, good public transport.


Base Backpacker Hostel St Kilda

in St Kilda is a modern hostel, 5 minutes walk from the beach. You can stay in a dormitory that does not hurt the budget or a private room, all with ensuites. Location is great!


Habitat HQ is a more modern and sustainable version of cheap hotels Melbourne. It is an award winning 4.5 star backpacker hostel near St Kilda beach, where you can experience the Melbourne grassroots culture and be right near cafes, bars, restaurants & thriving night and music scene.


While the St Kilda Beach House is not at the beach, but about 10 minutes walk to it, it is nevertheless a cool place where you can get your feet into the Melbourne culture scene.


You can also get cheap Melbourne hotels further along Port Phillip Bay in Beaumaris. You will need a car to be mobile from there, as it is an about 45 minute drive into the city, depending on traffic.

However, you are right at the beach, which is attractive and clean there. It makes a great family destination from where you can enjoy the best of Melbourne beaches.

gets excellent reviews. It is in the Beaumaris, right on Port Phillip Bay, 15 km from the Melbourne CBD. It is nice, clean and friendly at great location right next to Melbourne beaches.
